LaQuinton “Q” Nimox, AIA

LaQuinton “Q” Nimox, AIA, LEED AP BD+C leads by example as a part of the new generation of emerging millennial young architects. Shortly after earning his B. Arch from LSU in 2012, Nimox joined DNA Workshop, a locally owned firm committed to sustainable and responsible design.  While at DNA, Q has gained a broad understanding of architectural practice and has worked on projects of varying size and complexity, such as the downtown mixed-use development, 440 on Third. He has completed his IDP hours, ARE Exams, and earned LEED AP credentials during his first three years at DNA. Currently, he serves on the AIA Baton Rouge (AIABR) Board of Directors as Associate Liaison and on the planning committee of his local chapter of USGBC.

Why did you choose architecture as a profession?

A childhood hobby of LEGOs and Lincoln logs has turned into a life-long passion of enriching people’s lives through creative and meaningful design solutions. I love how the profession offers numerous avenues for which to broaden my understanding of the design, culture, and business.

Do you have a special habit you may do to get creative juices flowing?

One of my habits for getting the juices flowing is to just grab some trace and a few pens to put some quick ideas down. Sometimes a simple stroll around the block does the trick too.

What type of projects do you like to take on?

I understand it’s a buzzword these days but historic adaptive reuse projects are definitely my favorite. Before working at DNA, I’d never really considered the immense value of our existing building stock but there’s so many layers of context and history that new construction can’t replace.

What is your most favorite project you have worked on thus far?

My favorite project thus far would definitely have to be the Weinstein Poolhouse near the LSU Lakes. The ongoing collaboration between the client, contractor and us embodied what I will continue to strive for on every project I’m involved with.

What is one thing about your job people don’t expect or know about?

This past summer, DNA Workshop actually had it’s 15 minutes of fame with the Pitch Perfect 2 movie shoot. Everyone got a behind the scenes look at what it really takes to make a production for the big screen. Some coworkers even got to met Snoop Dogg, Elizabeth Banks, and Anna Kendrick. The best part was seeing how much of the shots in the office actually made it to the final movie.

What is your most satisfying professional accomplishment?

Finishing the exams/hours and getting licensed definitely takes the cake for this one! Man, was it a journey. Now through the AIABR ARE Marathoners, my goal is to share my experiences and help other interns achieve this important professional milestone.

What is the greatest personal or professional obstacle you’ve overcome?

Skydiving. In addition to being an adrenaline rush, skydiving changed my perspective on a lot and is a constant reminder to always take chances.

Are you are currently involved in any upcoming events for your local AIA Baton Rouge chapter?

Serving on the 2015 Rose Awards committee was really a new and exciting experience. It was a real challenge this year with all the new program changes but I think it was a great success. I’m also pumped that DNA Workshop will be co-hosting the AIA State Convention Progressive Dinner for all of the convention attendees. It’s going to be a great opportunity to open our doors and welcome fellow architects from around the state for fun night.

What do you do after a hard day at work to unwind?

Sometimes after a hard day at DNA, I like to get sweaty… with either an intense workout at the gym or a long bike ride along the Mississippi Levee.

If you could have any other job what would it be?

Not sure if it exists, but I think it would be really awesome to be an Uber driver in Europe. It would be so great to explore all the cities, meet new people and take in the different cultures.
