OUTLINE

The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) is charged with coordinating restoration and protection investments through the development and implementation of Louisiana’s Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast, which is updated every five years. As coastal areas across the nation face increasing threats from flooding, land loss and sea level rise, there is a great need to advance long-term coastal planning and adaptation strategies. Using a science-based and stakeholder-informed decision-making process, the master plan seeks to create a more sustainable coastal Louisiana and enable communities to adapt to a changing landscape. The Plan is a 50-year protection and restoration strategy with two ambitious goals: to restore Louisiana’s wetlands and to provide flood protection for coastal citizens. This session will step through the master plan’s process by providing an overview of key elements of the 2017 Master Plan, including the Flood Risk and Resilience Program and CPRA’s Flood Risk and Resilience Data Viewer.

BIOGRAPHY

Restore or Retreat, Inc, ushered in 2005 with a new Executive Director, Terrebonne Parish native Simone Theriot Maloz.  Simone works daily on the local, state and federal levels to advocate for the needs of the disappearing Louisiana coast, specifically the Barataria and Terrebonne Basins.  She has continuously worked on large scale and long term projects for the basins such as a major sediment and freshwater diversion and current restoration projects such as Davis Pond and Bayou Lafourche. Since the devastating hurricanes of 2005 and the 2010 oil spill, she has also been tracking the process of the different planning efforts underway, including the Natural Resources Damage Assessment Act (NRDA), RESTORE Act dedication of Clean Water Act Penalties, the 2012 and 2017 State Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast, all to ensure the needs of the Barataria and Terrebonne Basins are being adequately met with the necessary sense of urgency in the face of what is at stake.

She was appointed by Governor Jindal to serve on the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Coastal Protection, Restoration and Conservation in the summer of 2014, and is the Vice Chair of the Diversion Subcommittee. Maloz is also the Infrastructure and Governmental Affairs Co-Chair for the South Central Industrial Association, where she was honored with the Tillman Esteve Outstanding Member Award in 2010.  She formerly served as Board Chair of the Lafourche Chamber of Commerce, and on the board of the Bayou Industrial Group. She is a graduate of both Leadership Louisiana and Leadership Lafourche, where she serves as a board member.  Prior to working at Restore or Retreat, Simone worked at the American Cancer Society and Terrebonne General Medical Center, and graduated from Nicholls State University as the Outstanding Public Relations graduate.

Simone plans on having the Louisiana coast continue to serve as her home and the home of her children and grandchildren.
